The Augmented World: A Journey Through AR’s Past, Present, and Future
Imagine a world where the boundaries between reality and the digital realm blur, where information floats before your eyes, and virtual objects seamlessly integrate with your surroundings. This isn’t a scene from a sci-fi movie; it’s the world of Augmented Reality (AR), a technology that’s been quietly revolutionizing how we perceive and interact with our environment.
The Seeds of a New Reality
Our story begins in the 1960s, long before smartphones and social media dominated our lives. A visionary named Ivan Sutherland, often called the father of computer graphics, had a wild idea. What if we could create a display that would let a user see the real world overlaid with computer-generated images? In 1968, Sutherland and his team at Harvard University brought this idea to life with the Sword of Damocles, the world’s first head-mounted display system.
The Sword of Damocles was primitive by today’s standards — a bulky contraption suspended from the ceiling, too heavy for a person to wear comfortably. But it planted the seed of an idea that would grow and evolve over the next several decades.
